Tips to Optimize Iron Intake and Absorption

Posted by Pharmics on 9th May 2023

For those who deal with low iron levels or even iron deficiency anemia, adding more iron to their diet or other forms of ingestion is actually only half the battle. Two important related areas to consider here are iron intake and absorption, which speak to things like iron supplement timing, meal organization and several others that involve how your body processes and absorbs the iron you consume.

At Pharmics Inc., we're happy to offer high-quality iron supplements in several varieties, plus tips on proper intake methods for these and other forms of iron. Here are some general tips on maximizing iron intake strategy, ensuring iron is absorbed properly and your body gets maximum benefit from it.

optimize iron intake absorption

Take Supplements With an Empty Stomach (Ideally Before Bed)

When it comes to iron supplement timing, it's best to take them on an empty stomach, ideally before bed. This is because your body absorbs iron best when there are no other competing foods or nutrients present.

If you can't take your supplement right before bed, try and find a time where you're sure there won't be any food in your stomach for at least 2-3 hours prior.

Eat Fruit With Your Supplement if Needed

If you absolutely must eat food along with your iron supplement, try to consume something that's high in Vitamin C (such as oranges), which will help increase absorption. These kinds of fruit are also low in fiber, which is another factor that can affect iron absorption.

Avoid Dairy and Caffeine Before and After Taking Supplements

Dairy, as well as caffeine, both contain compounds that inhibit your body's ability to absorb iron, so it's best to avoid these two substances for a period of 2 hours before and after taking any supplements.

Avoid Taking Antacids or Calcium Supplements With Iron

Similarly to dairy or caffeine, antacids and calcium supplements can inhibit your body's ability to absorb iron, so be sure not to take them too close together.

By following these tips and considering other factors - such as meal organization and supplement timing - you can maximize your iron intake and absorption strategy for maximum benefit!
